M E D I A   R E L E A S E  Sheriff’s Office Launches Drug Drop Box Program

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has launched a Drug Drop Box Program that allows the public to safely and anonymously
dispose of unused prescription and non-prescription drugs.
Statistics tell us that one of the main starting points for drug abuse is unused prescription drugs kept in a home. These unused
medications can also cause accidental drug overdoses in children. We also recognize these medications can lead to groundwater
contamination if flushed down a toilet.

One of the Sheriff’s Office major initiatives has been to curb the abuse of drugs in our community, including prescription medications.
These medications can act as gateway drugs to other forms of drug abuse. By providing a convenient, anonymous way for these
medications to be safely disposed of, we reduce the risk of children or others obtaining these medications and potentially using them in
an abusive manner.

The Drug Drop Box is located in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters Building, 13101 East Broncos Parkway,
Centennial, CO. It will be available to the public year-round during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, from
7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.), excluding holidays.

The Sheriff’s Office cannot accept:
• Liquids and ointments
• Hypodermic needles or other “sharps”
• Inhalers
• Aerosol cans
• Thermometers
• Chemotherapy medications
• Any bio-hazardous materials

The Sheriff’s Office will accept and store the drugs, and then arrange for the safe and legal destruction in conjunction with the Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. If you have any questions, you may contact
Deputy Brian McKnight at 720-874-3750 or Deputy Scott Sickafoose at 720-874-4040 in the Sheriff’s Office Community Resources
Section, or you may visit our website at www.arapahoegov.com.
